Our Trial and Triumph

Yesterday our emptiness spilled out in puddles.
Tomorrow it may be ribs of water
or mercury that flees from our fingers.
Today, it was the universe.

An ocean,
a salt-wet lightning cradle
held us together in infinite space,
so high that I could cram your fear
into my mouth
and as we descended,
our tears popped like painful glass beads.

Today our emotions grew in currents
and rolled over the edge
coalescing
a molecule
a comet.

Yet hinged by our fingertips,
love loomed in the open path
between us,
illuminated and greeted us
with the measure of eternity
clasped in its grace.
